Education, Education…Bollocks

Nice to see the Archbishop of Downing Street making yet another Imperial Proclamation on education this week.

Strange how, when Bliar was on the Opposition benches in the mid 1990s, he thought that Grant Maintained Schools were evil and pernicious and would be a class-ridden mess, making sure that once again little Toby and Jemima would do very nicely at their carefully selected (and selective) schools thank you, while the rest of us have to think of the ridiculous expedient of moving house, just to get your kids into a half-decent school, instead of one starved of resources and on its knees becasue the torrent of fresh, “initiatives” you make them get involved in, just to make it look as if you’re doing something, anything about the whole sorry bloody mess.

So now, what has the Government done? Oh look, their new school proposals look just like Grant Maintained Schools, But they’re not. They’re different. Completely and totally different. Honest.

OK, Tony, I’m a parent. Here’s the deal: I want a choice.

And the choice I want is fairly simple; there’s only one. I want the local school to be well-funded and well-staffed. I want to be able to just send my daughter there, safe in the knowledge that she will get an education that will prepare her for adult life and give her a love of learning. I want her to be able to walk through the gates in the morning and not worry about whether her or her teacher will spend most of their time being abused by morons. And i want her to be able to eat decent food and not slop served up by companies who are cutting costs to maximise the profit on the contract they won to provide school meals.

Failing that, if you’re going to do selection, how about doing it on the grounds of ability? Forget class, forget money. If parents need help to send their kids to a kids to a school where their child does better. give it to them. Don’t stack the decks in favour of the affluent, like all market driven solutions do; markets only work for those who can afford to participate in them.

Oh, screw it. What am I talking about?
Like any of that’s ever going to happen. because it doesn’t fit Chairman Tony’s vision of our Glorious People’s Future.

And just don’t get me started on Higfher Education…
