“Merry Christmas”

One of the striking things about the referendum campaign demography I’ve seen is the strongly inverse relationship between the voter’s propensity to leave and age. In a couple of interviews, I heard older leavers saying that they were voting that way “for the sake of their children and grandchildren”.

You know at Christmas, when you all get together, and it’s time to unwrap presents? There’s the time when your granny passes you over a large, soft lumpy package with love in her eyes and a smile on her face. And as you unwrap it you know it’s going to be a lovingly hand-knitted jumper with a steam train on the front that you know will be about two sizes too big for you.

“Oh, Granny, you shouldn’t have…”

Yeah, well it’s like that.
